About Me

Kia ora, my name is Frances Stevens and I live and weave in Waiuku, Aotearoa | New Zealand.

I started weaving using a second-hand rigid heddle loom in 2013 and have been weaving ever since. My work ranges from accessories and household textiles to sculptural pieces. I love exploring and experimenting with different yarns, especially New Zealand wools, and weaving techniques. My inspiration comes from the colours and patterns in my surroundings. There is so much to discover in the world of weaving that I don’t think I’ll ever run out of things to try.

I named my weaving site in honour of my great-great-aunt Kate Alberta Worsdell, one of the approximately 24,000 women who signed the main suffrage petition submitted to the New Zealand Parliament on 28 July 1893. She wasn’t a weaver but she was a dressmaker. You can find out a little bit more about her and the other members of my family who signed the suffrage petition in this post.
